What we Treat / Diabetes & Foot Care
Diabetes mellitus, also called diabetes, is a metabolic disorder characterised by high blood sugar (glucose) levels. The condition results from a defect in the body's ability to produce or utilise insulin. Diabetes causes abnormally high glucose levels (hyperglycemia), circulatory problems, and nerve damage.
Diabetes cannot be cured, but it often can be managed with proper medical care, diet, and regular exercise. Our Chartered Physiotherapists prescribe exercise, heat, electrotherapy, massage, and other means of treatment for diabetic’s patients. Our Physio’s also use massage and electrical devices to target specific musculoskeletal problems, which are common to diabetics.
Foot Care & Diabetes
Diabetic Foot care is extremely important as leg and foot problems are the most common reason for diabetes-related hospitalisation. Regular examinations and vascular testing are important to help diagnose inadequate blood flow in the legs and feet.
Shoes should fit properly and should be made of soft, breathable materials, such as canvas or leather. New shoes should be broken in gradually and worn for short periods of time until they become soft enough to avoid causing blisters. Custom-made orthotics can help to relieve pressure and reduce irritation. Our podiatrist can complete a full biomechanical assessment. For more information on our podiatry service click here
Exercise & Diabetes
Lifestyle changes are crucial to the treatment of diabetes and regular exercise will help with related issues of diabetes. Our Chartered Physiotherapists train patients to perform specific exercises to strengthen muscles and improve circulation in areas that are especially problematic in diabetes, such as the feet. Exercises can:
- help with weight loss
- lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol
- lower blood pressure
- lower stress levels
- reduce the need for insulin or drugs
- help maintain muscle mass and reduce fat
- reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
What programme do I need to follow?
Regular exercise of at least 30-40 minutes, 4 times a week is recommended for those who suffer from diabetes. Our Chartered Physiotherapists can outline a regular exercise programme for you which will provide you with the structure you may need to start off your training.
